I’m Already Obsessed With The iPhone Air

We have new iPhones! One of them resembles last year’s model but features a fancy new selfie camera, which means you’ll never have to do hand gymnastics again to take the best shot. One is a shade of orange that’ll either look incredible or disappointing in person, and the other is actually a brand-new iPhone.

That’s right - the rumours were pretty much spot on, except for the naming convention. It’s called the iPhone Air (no ‘17’ in sight), and it’s the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made at just 5.6mm thick (beating the Samsung S25 Edge by 0.2mm - cheeky).

The iPhone Air is powered by the A19 Pro chip (which apparently offers MacBook Pro-levels of power), and has a fancy new N1 chip for connectivity duties, and an upgraded C1X modem. However, it has just one camera lens, no physical SIM card slot, and a mono speaker. The latter two concessions don’t bother me, but I am fascinated by how the iPhone Air performs as a camera phone, as I am by its battery stamina.

Also, just look at it.

I’ll be replacing my daily driver - the much-maligned yet boringly adequate iPhone 16e - with the iPhone Air. Apple tells us this is what the future looks and feels like, and if that’s the case, I want in. I’ve got lots more thoughts about the new lineup in this week’s Tech Diary video - go watch!

Instead of repeatedly tapping the Back button in the top-left corner when you’re buried a few layers into an app like Settings, just press and hold it. A list of the previous screens will appear, letting you quickly jump back to where you want without all the extra taps.
