THIS WEEK’S UPDATE

The iPhone Ultra could change everything

I’ve reviewed many foldable smartphones. I’ve also reviewed a bunch of flippable smartphones. They’re all very interesting but rather hard to recommend, unless the person inquiring knows exactly how they intend to make use of the unusual form factor. Because if they don’t, it’s a colossal waste of money; they might as well just buy a regular phone.

For the last few years, Apple has been quietly watching that part of the industry unfold (wow, what a brilliant and unintended pun). They haven’t commented on it (to my knowledge), and there hasn’t been a single product that has emerged from Cupertino which looks anything like Samsung’s Z Fold series.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you’ll have heard that Apple may finally be stepping into the foldable smartphone game. As I type, it’s all rumours, and nothing may happen at all, but those rumours point towards a potential autumn release of something called the β€˜iPhone Ultra’.

It’s got me excited, mainly because it appears Apple is trying something slightly different. And we need different. More thoughts from me on this on this week’s Tech Diary!
